When should I apply cream? Which cream should I use for what (nappy changes, outdoors, after bathing)?

It’s difficult to make general recommendations about when to apply creams or moisturisers since most children don’t need them regularly. However, for children with dry skin, the regular application of moisturiser can improve the skin’s barrier function. An American pilot study even indicates that it can reduce the risk of neurodermatitis in genetically predisposed children1.

Applying moisturiser can also be beneficial when the air is very dry (e.g. due to heating in winter), with frequent bathing, or in particularly afflicted areas (around the mouth, on the hands, etc.).

Regardless of skin type, the face should be protected from low temperatures by applying a very rich cream.

If other preventative measures (staying out of the sun, wearing protective clothing) are not possible or sufficient, then sunscreen should be used.

If applied at the first signs of irritation, the use of barrier creams in the nappy area can help to soothe and heal nappy rash. Some parents swear by the regular application of nappy rash cream to prevent irritations altogether.
