HiPP Organic Fruit: whole fruit from the very first spoonful
We monitor HiPP organic fruit from blossom to processing. HiPP selects particularly mild, low-acid varieties for baby food.
Organic farming does not use synthetic chemical pesticides. Significantly more insect species, such as bees, butterflies and other flying insects, are found on organically farmed land.
Bananas from the jungles of Costa Rica
The ancient, superb ‘Gros Michel’ banana variety grows under ideal conditions right in the heart of Costa Rica’s rainforest. It is highly aromatic, has a sugar content that is ideal for baby food, and is never found on large plantations. The indigenous population, on the other hand, cultivates it using traditional methods, thereby helping to preserve the unique biodiversity of the highland jungle.
HiPP has entered into long-term contracts locally. Since then, around 1,000 smallholders have been able to rely on guaranteed off-take and fair prices. To ensure the outstanding quality of the raw materials that HiPP requires for its premium baby food, a member of staff works on site. Over the course of two decades, a strong relationship of trust has developed between him and the smallholder families. In doing so, the German baby food manufacturer has taken on a significant social responsibility towards people for whom a regular income was often barely possible in the past.
The driving forces behind the banana project, from which over 10,000 people in the region benefit directly and indirectly, are primarily women. In addition to the social benefits, there are environmental advantages: unlike in plantation farming, the banana plants are grown individually and spaced far apart. In the event of disease or fungal infestation, the affected plant can therefore simply be removed to prevent the problem from spreading. Unlike in conventional cultivation, no pesticides or plant protection products are used whatsoever. This preserves the natural habitat of people, plants and animals and protects biodiversity.
