Why do babies get sore bottoms?

Skin irritations are normal for babies who are still wearing nappies. This is because baby’s sensitive skin is under a lot of strain in the nappy area due to the aggressive environment created by urine and stool. Even frequent nappy changes and a good skincare routine with the right products can’t always prevent sore skin.

Irritated skin is likely to occur when your baby is teething, suffering from an infection or is reacting to a new food.

In addition to proper skincare, it is very important to keep the skin dry:

  • Change nappies frequently, as a dry bottom is less likely to become sore.
  • After cleaning your baby’s bottom, allow the skin to dry thoroughly, especially the skin folds, to avoid soreness. Dry the skin by patting gently and do not rub.
  • Let them wriggle about without a nappy as often as possible (keeping the room warm). This way, the area that is normally covered by the nappy will be exposed to fresh air, allowing the skin to breathe. Your baby will enjoy this!

Nappy changing and skincare:

  • Barrier cream may be applied to the nappy area as a preventative measure, so that urine and stool do not affect your baby’s skin. Nourishing ointments with zinc are ideal for this purpose as they also protect the skin against moisture (for example, HiPP Nappy Rash Cream).
  • Choose the right nappy: use disposable nappies with an effective absorbent core. Urine is soaked up by an absorbent gel so the skin stays dry in between nappy changes.
  • The nappy should not be too tight. You will know that the nappy fits correctly if you can fit two fingers between baby’s tummy and the nappy’s waistband.
