When and how often should my baby drink?
When your baby is hungry, latch on your baby. Thus, your baby will be fed according to demand and within a few days lactation will have been adjusted accordingly. If your baby’s appetite increases, the baby will want to drink more often: this will stimulate lactation and more milk will be available. A higher lactation also means that the period between each breastfeeding will automatically increase.
Is my baby receiving enough milk?
The amount your baby drinks can vary from meal to meal as well as from day to day. An indication that the amount of milk available is sufficient is that your baby’s diaper is rather heavy for 4 – 5 times a day. Additionally, you can weigh your baby once a week.
Changing from breast milk to infant milk – which, when, how much?
There are no set rules for weaning. Mother and child have to get used to the new situation slowly and that may individually differ very much. Whether weaning is your or your baby’s choice, a step by step process rather than weaning suddenly is easier and less stressful for the both of you. If you want to start weaning, it is recommended that you plan a step by step approach.
By replacing one breastfeed after another with PRE formula, your lactation will be reduced slowly, without your breasts becoming overfull and sore. This way, you also make sure that your baby is slowly getting used to other foods and is receiving additional tender loving care.
